Your system is low on virtual memory’

‘Your system is low on virtual memory’

Virtual memory is a part of the hard disk that Windows uses like extra memory. Ifthis message appears in Windows XP, check that it is being managed properly.

Virtual memory, also known as a page file or swap file, is a file on your hard drive (C:\pagefile.sys by default) that Windows and applications use in addition to physical memory (RAM) as needed. The default and recommended size of this file is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. Virtual memory is the sum of physical memory and the page file. So if your computer has 512 MB RAM, it will have a 768 MB page file by default, for a total of 1.25 GB of physical + virtual memory

To determine which application is causing this problem.Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to access Windows Task Manager. Navigate to Processes tab. Here you can see the list of all the processes running in your system.Click View, Select Columns

Now you can check the Virtual Memory usage in your Processes tab. Click the top of the VM Size column to arrange the processes by their VM Size from largest to smallest.

Every application will use more memory the longer you keep it open. This is one reason that Windows becomes more and more unresponsive the longer you keep it running, and why you end up needing to restart your computer periodically.

Do use Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Mail Beta offers similar features, plus some great new ones—like free access to Windows Live Hotmail and integration with other Windows Live services. The mail feature I find is that it is not saving mails to a single file ( DBX) the mails are saving to a folder as separate files (EML) . so the loading will be more faster than OE. OE is replaced with Windows live mail in Window vista. I getting a lot of dbx crash issues from my client users.

• Fast
o Access multiple e-mail accounts in one place
o Drag, drop, and organize with one click
o Compose and manage e-mail even while you're offline—when you next connect to the Internet, Windows Live Mail will automatically send and receive messages for you

• Easy
o Integrated Windows Live services let you launch Messenger right from Mail, and go to Windows Live Spaces with a single click
o Photo E-mail lets you create and send slide shows to friends and family
o All-new, cleaner, easier-to-use interface supports Aero on Vista
o RSS feeds and newsgroup messages are displayed next to your e-mail, and you can search them from within Windows Live Mail

• Safer than ever
o Get powerful virus scanning on all of your Hotmail messages
o Enjoy increased protection from phishing scams, across all your e-mail accounts
o Block suspicious messages—and senders, too
o Destroy junk e-mail with a single click
o Color-coded messages help you quickly identify suspicious and safe e-mail

Bug Fixes!
As usual, most of our other changes in this build will come to you in the form of bug fixes. Since our last Beta build, we’ve not only included feature updates like the ones listed above – but we’ve also fixed hundreds of bugs within the product.
It would be impossible to list all these fixes out individually, so I’m just going to point out the ones that we got the most customer feedback on…

• 1) Sound notification with new email: This was probably one of our most requested fixes – so hopefully you all will be happy to hear (literally ;-) that the fix for sound notification when you get new mail is now in the builds.
• 2) APOP fix: With our previous build, we were a little too aggressive in the way we determined whether or not a customer’s account was enabled for APOP. Because of this, some of you weren’t able to check mail on some of your POP accounts. With this build, using APOP is dependent on a user setting.
• 3) Messages getting stuck in the Outbox: Lots of customers ran into an issue where messages would get stuck in the Outbox (among other folders), which could block you from being able to send and receive messages in certain situations. A fix for this issue is now in the build, so you should no longer run into this problem.
• 4) Quoted-Printable updates: We have improved the way we handle the quoted-printable encoded Plain Text messages when replying and forwarding to mail. Most notably, we now clearly indicate which portions of the mail should be quoted with the appropriate character (‘<’). How to retrieve a deleted file ?

You can retrieve your file which you delete from recycle bin. But if you press “shift delete” How you get it back ?
You can use PC Inspector File Recovery to recover your files. But you must have administrative privileges.

Windows Tips and Tricks - Part 1

Windows Tips and Tricks - Part 1

How to remove MSN messenger form windows ?
Some of us just don't like to use this IM program. I myself have looked in the Add/Remove Program panel and can't find any way to remove it there. I found out how to do it with a little research.

Just go to Start->Run and type in
rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf
and hit ENTER

Do a copy and paste to avoid typographical errors.

How to shutdown Windows Faster ?

All versions of Windows have the same problem. It usually takes a little longer to shutdown when you have the Exit Sound enabled.

To disable this :

go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Sounds.
Scroll down and look for Exit Windows.
Click on it once and then under Sounds,
choose None.

You should see faster shutdown times.

How to make XP stop displaying zipped files as folders ?

In XP, zipped folders could be viewed just by opening up the file. If you have a third party zip program that youjavascript:void(0) want to use instead of the built in one by XP, you can stop XP from displaying the zipped files as folders. This may also be useful for those who are on a slow PC and don't want to open zip files using XP's built in zip program.

To disable this in XP, go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll. You may just copy and paste the command into the Run menu. If you want to undo it, just type in regsvr32 zipfldr.dll. Zip away.

How to Create a Password Reset Disk ?

Windows XP allows you to create a password reset disk, just in case you forget the password and can't login. This is only for computers that are not on a domain. Those that are on a domain may or may not work the same way.

Go to Start->Control Panel->User Accounts and click on your user name. Under Related Tasks on the left pane, click Prevent a forgotten password. A wizard will show up. Click next and then insert a floppy disk into your floppy drive and choose to save the reset disk on the floppy.

Enter your current password and then click Next and Finish. The floppy will now contain your encrypted password. If you forget your password, you can just use the Password Reset Wizard to create a new one. Just make sure to create another reset disk once you changed your password. So if you forgot your password and changed it to a new one, create another reset disk by repeating the above procedure again.

How To Enable HibernationUnder ?

Windows 98, Me, or 2000 there was an option in the shutdown dialog box to enter the computer into hibernation (where all the content of the RAM is copied to the hard disk). The shutdown dialog box of Windows XP doesn't offer any longer the hibernation button. Some users may get confused about how to enable the hibernation mode. If this mode is supported by your motherboard (ACPI) you have to do the following:
1. Click Start and Shut Down,
2. Point the standby button and maintain the shift key pushed,
3. A new hibernation button appears: click it while still holding the shift key: voila your PC will hibernate.

4. Do not continue if you are unable to find these values.
5. Change the values "8B C6" to read "90 90" and save the changes.
6. Run these commands to update the system files:
7. copy c:\windows\system32\sfc_os1.dll c:\windows\system32\sfc_os.dll /y
8. copy c:\windows\system32\sfc_os1.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache\sfc_os.dll /y
9. If you are prompted to insert the Windows CD, click Cancel.
