How to Fix Limited or No Connectivity Error Message In Xp Sp2
How to Fix Limited or No Connectivity Error Message In Xp Sp2
After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may receive the following error message in the System Tray.
"This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. "
Solutions to the problem are varied, however most of the solutions found on the web just mask the problem by simply guiding the user through turning off this notification. Now this solution may work great for systems that are showing a false positive error, but what if the system genuinely has lost its local area connection or the connection is unstable, what then?
One possible answer involves a bug in Service Pack 2 of Windows XP dealing with a loss of network connectivity for workstations that use Microsoft’s L2TP-based virtual private networking (VPN) client to connect to servers that are connected to NAT-based networks. However, this bug seems to appear in situations that are not associated with VPNs either.
If patching Windows XP for this bug does not fix the problem, read through the list below of other causes and fixes. You may have to reinstall your firewall, rebuild the configuration in your router, drop your connection speed from 100Mbps to 10Mbps, or assign static IP addresses to your computers in the network to resolve this issue.
How do I know if my system is affected by this bug?
If you have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and are experiencing any of the following symptoms, this bug is affecting your system.
• After installing Windows XP SP2, your network connection reports a problem with "Limited or No Connectivity"
• You have trouble connecting to the Internet or your local area network after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2.
• Your network connection gets stuck "Acquiring IP Address"
What Steps Can I Take to Fix This Problem?
If you are receiving this error, you should run the Microsoft patch (KB884020) for it. Follow the instructions below to do this.
1) Download the patch from Microsoft's site
2) Run the update to install it
3) Run this short Registry fix to complete the update. Type the following lines in Notepad and save the file as "FixReg.reg" on your desktop, then double click on it to install into your registry.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]
"AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule"=dword:00000002
4) Reboot your computer
If you experience the error message again, reboot your computer first. In most cases this will solve many connectivity issues that are not associated with this SP2 bug.
My Connection Works, Can I just disable the warning message?
If your local area connection is working properly and you simply want to disable the warning message follow these steps.
1.Open Control Panel
2. Open Network Connections and Right Click on the Local Area Connection and click on Properties
3.Uncheck the following option on the General Tab
"Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"
4.Click OK and close the Network Connections window.
What If Installing this Patch Doesn't Help?
Other Causes For This Problem
If you are still experiencing this error message even after running the patch shown above, you may be experiencing one of several problems shown below:
1.Your Network or DSL router may have bad or missing information. Powercycle your router and/or rebuild the configuration in your router.
2.Double-check your cabling to the computer. Make sure you have the correct type of cabling, straight-through CAT 5 or possibly a crossover cable and try another cable or test the cable to make sure its working properly.
3.Check your network card to make sure its configured correctly and working properly. Many times setting the network card to 10Mbps/Full Duplex will solve this issue. To do this, open Control Panel-->System-->Device Manager. Go to the properties of the Network card, click on the Advanced tab and find the Link Speed andDuplex section. Change it from Auto Detect to 10Mbps/Full Duplex.
4. Check and test your firewall. Your firewall, especially if its a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, Black Ice, Norton Firewall or something else could be blocking the connection. Disable your firewall and test the connection. You may have to resolve the problem by even uninstalling and reinstalling the firewall.
5.Check your IP address assignments and workgroup settings in the computer for accuracy. Statically assign IPs to the computers in your network.
I hope this will solve your Problem.
How To Fix “Bootmgr is missing” in Windows Vista
How To Fix “Bootmgr is missing” in Windows Vista
There are 5 Methods to solve this Problem.Firstly, I’ll start with the easier solutions just in case one of those happens to work. If not, we’ll go to the more complicated solutions.
Method 1 – Unplug secondary hard drives
One reason you might get the Bootmrg is missing error is because multiple hard drives of different types are installed. For example, if you have one SATA drive and a secondary SCSI drive, you might end up having this problem.
One simple solution is to unplug the second drive and then reboot. If Vista starts up fine, then reconnect the secondary hard drive and reboot again. Hopefully the problem will go away.
If the message comes back when you connect the secondary HDD, then you will have to disconnect it again, reinstall Vista with just the one drive, take out the CD and reboot. Windows will load up fine. Then plug the secondary drive back in and reboot.
Method 2 – Change hard disk boot priority
Another simple setting you can check that might fix the problem is to go into your BIOS and check the boot sequence and boot priority. First, make sure that the HDD is number 1 in the boot sequence, not Floppy drive or CDROM, etc.
As you can see from the picture above, CDROM is set as the first boot device. We want to change that to Hard Disk. Secondly, if you have an option for Hard Disk Boot Priority, like in the screen above, you want to pick the hard drive (if you have more than one physical disk) that has Windows Vista installed on it.
If you change both of these settings to the correct boot device and hard disk, you should not get the Bootmrg is missing error anymore! If you do, continue reading for more advanced ways to fix the problem!
Method 3 – Unplug any USB devices
I’ve read in several places that people left the USB flash drives attached to their computers for a long period of time and if you happen to install a Windows update patch when the USB drive is connected and then reboot, you will end up getting this message in Vista.
Go ahead and unplug any USB flash drives you may have connected to the computer and then restart.
Method 4 – Rebuild the BCD Store
The third method is a bit more complicated, but may be required if nothing else worked for you. Firstly, make sure you only have one active partition and that it is set to the partition that has Windows Vista installed. If you have more than one active partition, you will have problems.
Next rebuild the BCD store by using the bootrec tool in the Windows Vista Repair environment. You can do this by popping in the Vista DVD and choosing Repair your computer.
Next choose the operating system and and then click Command Prompt in the System Recovery Options dialog.
Now type the following command at the prompt and press Enter:
Bootrec /RebuildBcd
If it finds the Windows installation, it will ask you add the entry, so type Yes. If it cannot locate any Windows Installation, then you have to remove the BCD store and re-create it. Type in the following commands if this is the case:
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
Note that you should change C: to the partition you installed Windows Vista to. Now restart the computer with the Vista DVD still inside. Choose the repair option and let it repair the Vista installation. Restart again and your problem should now be fixed.
Method 5 – Copy bootmrg file from another computer
Finally, you can try to actually copy the file from a working Windows Vista machine and put it in the appropriate directory on the computer that is not booting up correctly. Bootmrg is located at the root of the C drive (or whichever drive you installed Vista), but is only visible if you unhide protected operating system files.
Basically, open My Computer, click on Organize, click on Folder and Search options, click on the View tab and then choose the Show hidden files and folders radio button and uncheck the Hide operating system files box.
Now go to your C drive and copy the bootmrg file onto a USB stick or CD. Then go to the other computer and either boot up with the Vista DVD inserted or boot using using some kind of Vista start up disc. Copy the file to the same location and restart the computer without the Vista DVD and hopefully you should not get this message anymore!
If you are still having problems with bootmgr is missing, please post your problem in the comments section and I’ll try to help.

Not able to open drives on hard disk by double click - Autorun.inf Virus
Not able to open drives on hard disk by double click due to Autorun.inf Virus
Sometimes it happens in windows XP that you are not able to open drives on your hard disk. When you double clicking on the drives icons or right click on the drive-->explore in My computer ,the drive does not open.
This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives.
What actually Causes this Problem?
Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.
This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.
You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct this problem.

How to avoid chkdsk disk scan at every time booting windows
First of All Lets see what is Disk Scan?
Disc scan is one of the protective feature of windows which runs to clean any cross-links or bad sectors that may be generated because of the improper shutdown of windows due to some reason. So, when ever you shutdown your system in some improper way ,the next time you boot your windows you will see scan disk running which you can stop by pressing an key on time.
But in some cases as experienced by some of the windows users, disk scan runs every time they reboot, this happens because of the following reasons:
1. Improper shutdown(most common).
2. External HDD or portable drive attached which causes scan disk to scan them at every reboot.
3. chkdsk was not allowed to be completed at the time of boot.
Above reasons are normally the most common reasons behind this problem, but none of them matches with your case then, you probably have a dirty volume on your hard drive which has some bad sectors which does not get repaired at the time of reboot.
So, at every reboot chkdsk tries to repair those dirty bits on those bad sectors on your hard drive in those specific partitions.
But, don’t worry as you can simply fix this problem of disc scanning at every reboot.
Solution:
You need to do a manual chkdsk on all the partitions or physical hard drives.
1. Open start-->run and type cmd
2. Type chkntfs /x For example: chkntfs /x d:
3. Run this command for all the partitions of your hard drive.
4. Reboot your computer properly it will not do a disk scan again.
I hope this solves your problem.
Tips:
Use Tuneup Utilities or System Mechanic to keep to HDD Healty.Because these Utilities are Like Doctors for your Windows Platform.
Folder options disabled by Virus / Trojan
Are you not able to access or see your folder options under File Menu>>Tools in Windows Explorer on your Windows XP ? This problem of hidden or disabled folder options occur normally due to malicious virus (w32.rontokbro@mm) activity.
The virus creates an entry in registry to disable “Folder Options” in Windows explorer.
Solution to recover Disabled Folder Option:
In most of the cases, even if the virus is been already removed by your anti-virus program, it doesn’t restore the registry back to the original state. Also anti-virus usually does not delete the registry entry created by the virus.
For restoring the registry settings, follow the steps given below
*Enable your folder options in explorer.
1. Go to Start --> RUN
2. Type regedit and press enter.
3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows --> CurrentVersion --> Policies-- > Explorer
4. On the right side of the screen, you can see some registry entry names, out of them, right-click on NoFolderOptions and click Modify option.
5.A new small screen pops up, on this screen, sen the value data field as 0 (zero).Press OK.
That’s it but it requires reboot. Trouble Fixed.
or
You can also make the Registry File using notepad Double Click on it,Trouble is Fixed.
1.Copy and Paste the Below thing in NotePad
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoFolderOptions"=dword:0000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoBrowserOptions"=dword:00000000
2. File-->Save as--> "Aleem.reg"
Note: Change in Save as type to All Files.
My CD / DVD drive does not appear in My Computer with other drives
This Problem may be due to the Following 2 reasons:
1. One possible reason may be the IDE cable/ power cable not plugged properly. That can be fixed by pressing the cable into the drive.
2. The second may be due to some misconfiguration in the registry caused by some software. For such case, the following values can be copied to notepad, and saving the file as a "drive.reg" file and merging it with the registry.

NTLDR missing or NTDETECT.COM not found in windows XP
ou have probem with “NTLDR is missing, Press any key to restart” during boot up ?
What is NTLDR ?
NTLDR (NT Loader) is the boot loader for all releases of Microsoft’s Windows NT operating system up to and including Windows XP.
This message NTLDR is missing indicates that the boot loader is either corrupted or missing due to some reason.
Let’s now see how we can fix it.
Fix:
There are two approaches to fix the missing boot loader in windows XP.
If your Windows is installed on FAT32 Partitions:
1. Boot your computer with a Win98 startup floppy.
2. Now, copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files from the i386 directory on your floppy to your windows installation drive (e.g in “c:\” in case the windows is installed on c:).
If your Windows is installed on NTFS Partitions:
1. Arrange for the bootable Windows XP setup CD.
2. Boot from CD select R=Repair option, by pressing R key during the setup.
3. Select the windows installation.
4. You need to enter in the administrator password when requested, if you had not set any password for the administrator account just press enter without typing.
5. Type the following commands to repair the bootloader, where X is the drive letter for your CD / DVD drive.
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
6. Eject CD-ROM and type exit to restart.
"Generic volume cannot be stopped right now" error when Removing a pen-drive
When you try to remove a USB pen-drive by using “Safely Remove Hardware > Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, windows should stop all the read-write operations on the drive so that the drive can be removed.
But sometimes when you try to eject the USB device by using “Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, it shows a message box which says:
“The Device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later”
In such case its not safe to remove the pen drive as it can get corrupt or get damaged. Many of us face such problem in removing pen-drive. In this post we will see how to fix such issue.
First Let’s see why it happens and the fix
This error comes when you have an application which is running from your pen drive or may be some file or document opened from your pen-drive when you are removing your drive.
In short, some file on your pen drive is in use by some other program on that computer. So close all such files or applications and try removing the drive.
It happens sometimes that you have no application running from your pen drive or any file opened in your knowledge but still when you try to remove the pen-drive it shows this error message shown above. In that case you can use a free application called Unlocker which will help you to remove your pen drive from your windows.
What is Unlocker?
Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file, folder or pen drive to get rid of error message like the one mentioned above.
How To Remove USB Pen Drive with Unlocker?
1. Download Unlocker from here and install it on your computer.
2. Right click on your USB pen drive in my computer and select Unlocker.
3. A new window will open that will list all the busy handles of files being used on your pen drive. Now click the button which says Unlock All
After clicking Unlock All try to remove your pen drive normally, through “Safely Remove Hardware” dialog.
If still you are not able to remove pen drive then try clicking the Kill Process button in Unlocker.
Note: If none of the above given approach works then turn off the computer and then remove your pen drive out of the USB port.Else your Pen drive will be damaged.
I hope the solution provided above will help you fix the problem, if you know another way to solve this trouble please share it through comments.
Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator

Method 3:
If the above two methods does not work for you , you can also try executing a small vbscript which I found on major geeks.
1. First Download EnableRegEdit.vbs(http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/enableregedit.vbs)
2. Double click on the downloaded file to enable registry editing.
I hope at least one of the above will help to fix the trouble.
